Using the function
you can analyze your database´s passwords' quality.
To go to this function, select the option
from the menu.
The dialog window Password Analyzer
consists of five columns:
- Description: Shows you the passwords contained in
the opened database.
- Entropy: Shows your passwords' strength using
the bit unit. The higher the number of bits,
the stronger the password.
- Dictionary similarity: Shows
you the overlap or similarity between your password and conventional
dictionary entries. If you are using a password that is either identical
or close to identical with a dictionary entry, your security decreases
tremendously. The reason for this is as follows: During a so-called
dictionary attack, potential
attackers/hackers will go through and check an extensive list of frequently
used passwords or password elements.
- Quality: This column contains a colored
bar indicating the passwords' quality. The longer and more green-ish
or blue-ish the bar, the higher the password's quality. The quality
of a password depends on its length and the different character types
it contains. You will achieve the highest quality and maximum security
if your password consists of the following characters: lowercase letters,
uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Time to crack: Indicates
how long it would approximately take to crack your password, if a
professional hacker attempted to do so via brute-force or dictionary
attacks. It is only an approximate value, which is nevertheless calculated
with sophisticated algorithms and, thus, more reliable than many other
estimates you will find on the Internet.
If you click on one of the column titles, the passwords will be sorted
according to this column's content.
In order to improve the quality of a password, select the corresponding
password and click Edit..., at the
left of the window. (This button is inactive as long as no entry is selected.)
The Properties (Modify
Entry) dialog box opens, where you can modify/change the password
as you wish.
