Android app: Error opening a database from Dropbox ("Trust anchor for certification path not found")

If the Password Depot app for Android shows the error message "Trust anchor for certification path not found" when connecting to Dropbox or when opening a database stored there, the cause is neither your database nor your Dropbox account. It is caused by a change on Dropbox's side (a certificate/interface change) that prevents older versions of the Android app from validating the service's certificate chain.

Solution: Update the app

  1. Open the Google Play Store, search for "Password Depot", and tap Update. The error is fixed with the app update from early 2026 (version 19.0.7).

  2. Then restart the app and reconnect to Dropbox in the Database Manager; sign in again if necessary.

Your database in Dropbox remains untouched – no data is lost.

Temporary workaround: A different cloud service or WebDAV

If you cannot install the update – for example, because your device does not meet the Android version required for app version 19 (see "Related topics") – switch temporarily to a different cloud service (e.g. OneDrive) or to WebDAV:

  1. On your PC, upload the database to the other service – into the default folder that Password Depot creates itself when you sign in to the service.

  2. Connect the app to the new service and open the database from there.

Note – first measure for cloud errors: update the app. Cloud providers change their interfaces and security requirements regularly. Older app and program versions then lose access without you having changed anything in your configuration. For example, Google blocks sign-ins from outdated Password Depot versions (10.x to 17.x), and in the past the Google Drive sign-in of older Android app versions failed due to an authorization issue on Google's side. So whenever a connection to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. fails, first check whether the app and the Windows client are up to date.
