macOS & Linux

How does the macOS client differ from the Windows version – and what does it cost?

In addition to the Windows version, Password Depot is also available as a separate client for macOS. The most common questions about it: What does the macOS client cost, where does the license key go – and can it do everything the Windows version can?

Free of charge – no license key

The macOS client is free of charge. You do not need a license key, and there is no way to enter one in the macOS client. A license key purchased for Windows can therefore neither be entered there, nor is it required. Only the Windows client requires a license; the versions for macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS are free to use.

A separate app – not an identical feature set

The macOS client is an independently developed application, not a 1:1 port of the Windows version. The core password management features are available to you, as is the connection to Password Depot Enterprise Server. However, some features of the Windows version are missing on macOS – for example, the Top Bar mode and the permanent deletion of external files (on Windows: Tools → Erase external files, often called the "file shredder"). This list is not exhaustive; the feature set of the version you have installed is authoritative.

Touch ID

Unlocking via Touch ID is planned for the macOS client; there is no release date yet.

Version numbers and Enterprise Server

The macOS client and the Windows client are versioned independently of each other. For the connection to the Enterprise Server, the following applies: The Windows client must have the same main version as the server. The macOS client, by contrast, may also be newer than the server – as of version 15, it can connect to servers with older main versions; to do so, select the matching server main version in the login dialog.

Note: Download the macOS client from the download page of the Password Depot website (Download Password Depot for Windows, macOS & More Free) and always use the latest version if possible – the feature set grows with each update.
