Enterprise Server

How to allow and force standard users to change their password

Standard users log on to Password Depot Enterprise Server (version 19) with Password Depot credentials that the administrator creates manually in the Server Manager – including an initial password. This article shows how you, as an administrator, allow, block, or force password changes – and how users change their Enterprise Server login password themselves in the Windows client.

Allowing, blocking, or forcing password changes (administrator)

In the Server Manager, open the Users area, double-click the user in question (or right-click → Properties), and switch to the Account tab. Two settings are available under Account options:

  • User may not change password: The user cannot change their login password themselves.

  • User must change password at next logon: The user is prompted to change their password at their next logon – this way, the initial password assigned by the administrator is replaced right away. Afterwards, the user can still adjust their password themselves at any time.

Both options only take effect for locally created users with Password Depot credentials, not for users synchronized from Active Directory, Entra ID, or OpenID Connect. On the same tab, you as the administrator can also set a new password for a standard user yourself at any time.

Changing your own password (user view)

As a standard user, you change your Enterprise Server login password in the Windows client as follows:

  1. Open Home → PD Enterprise Server and sign in with your current credentials.

  2. Click Server account – the Account properties dialog opens.

  3. Switch to the Security tab and, in the Authentication section, click Change password.... The button is only enabled if your account type supports password changes and the administrator has not blocked them.

  4. Enter your current password and then set the new password.

Note: Changing your own password is only possible for locally created users. With Integrated Windows Authentication (Active Directory), Entra ID, or OpenID Connect, the password is managed by the identity provider and synchronized with the server – change it there, not in Password Depot.

Note: This article covers the login password for the Enterprise Server – not the master password of a local database and not the super administrator's password. You change the super administrator's password exclusively in the Server Manager under Users → admin → Properties → Account; it cannot be changed via the client or the REST API.
