General information

Server mirroring is used in network management to create a replica of a server. This replica is continuously updated on runtime. With the server mirroring feature in Password Depot Enterprise Server, administrators can duplicate the entire content of their server on another remote or in-house server. This way, you can access your data in case the primary server fails. Through server mirroring in Password Depot Enterprise Server, you can synchronize and back up your data from the primary server to a backup server.

In case of a server failure, users can simply connect to the mirror server by entering its address in the following window: For instance:

IP address of the principal server: 192.168.178.155

IP address of the mirror server: 192.168.178.156

Notes and Requirements

Requirements:

  • Password Depot Enterprise Server (Server Manager) installed on two different Windows computers.

  • Static IPv4 address on both computers.

  • The Enterprise Server must be run as a Windows service.

  • The log on account used for the service of the Enterprise Server PD_Service_19 (number corresponds to the version of the program) must have full read and write access to the program directory of the Server Manager.

  • Firewall rules allowing incoming and outgoing TCP/UDP connections over Port 25019 on both sides/computers.

Notes:

As of version 19.2.0, the Enterprise Server uses a new authentication method. Using the same admin password on both servers is therefore no longer sufficient for setting up mirroring. Instead, the entire \Data, \CA and \Cert folders must be copied from the principal server to the mirror server (see steps 2–6 below). If these folders are not copied, connecting to the mirror server will fail with the error “Unknown user name or bad password” or a certificate error message.

Do not use this feature to migrate your data to a different computer. Server migrations must be performed as described here:

https://www.password-depot.de/en/support/faq/how-to-migrate-from-a-previous-version-to-password-depot-enterprise-server-19.htm

How to set up mirroring

Step 1: Create firewall rules and allow incoming and outgoing TCP/UDP connections over port 25019 (25019 is the default port for Version 19) on both computers.

Step 2: On the principal server, create and install a certificate that contains the IP addresses of both the principal and the mirror server.

Step 3: On computer B (the one that will act as a mirror server), stop the PD_Service_19 service.

Step 4: Copy the entire \Data folder from the program directory of the Enterprise Server on computer A (your main/principal server) to the program directory of the Enterprise Server on computer B, replacing the existing \Data, \CA and \Cert folders there.

Step 5: Also install the certificate created in step 2 (\CA folder) on the mirror server.

Step 6: On computer B, start the PD_Service_19 service again.

Step 7: Open the Server Manager on both computers, and connect to both sides with the default admin user of the principal server.

Step 8: On computer A (your main/principal server), click on Manage → Server Mirroring.

Step 9: Select the server role “Principal”.

Step 10: Enter the IPv4 address (not the domain) and port of your main/principal server.

Step 11: Enter the IPv4 address (not the domain) and port of your mirror server.

Step 12: Click on “OK”.

Step 13: On computer B (the one that will act as a mirror server), click on Manage → Server Mirroring.

Step 14: Select the server role “Mirror”.

Step 15: Enter the IPv4 address (not the domain) and port of your main/principal server.

Step 16: Enter the IPv4 address (not the domain) and port of your mirror server.

Step 17: Click on “OK”.

Step 18: Restart the PD_Service_19 service on both computers and connect to the Server Manager with the same user as in step 7.
