WebDAV and other cloud services on the Mac – current status

In the Windows client, you can store databases directly in various locations: on the local system, on cloud services (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, HiDrive), and on Internet servers via FTP, WebDAV, and HTTP. The macOS client does not currently offer the same range. This article summarizes the current status.

WebDAV

The macOS client does not currently support WebDAV. Support is planned; there is no release date yet. A database stored on a WebDAV server (for example, with a self-hosted service or a provider that only offers WebDAV) can therefore not be opened directly on the Mac.

Other cloud services

Which cloud connections your installed macOS version offers directly is shown in the client when you select the storage location (when opening or adding a database). The feature set of the macOS client grows with each update – so use the latest version whenever possible.

Workaround: locally synced folder

If your cloud service is not directly integrated on the Mac, you can store the database as a local file in a folder that your cloud provider's Mac app (desktop sync client) synchronizes automatically. Password Depot then works with the local file; the provider's sync client handles the transfer to the cloud. When doing so, be sure to observe the following:

  1. Close the database in Password Depot before switching devices so the sync client can fully upload the file.

  2. Do not open and edit the database on several devices at the same time – otherwise, conflicting copies can arise and changes can be lost.

  3. Additionally, keep your own backup of the database file (see "Related topics": storage locations and backups).

This approach is intended as a workaround, not as a replacement for a direct cloud or WebDAV integration.

Team use

For sharing databases in teams and companies, the Password Depot Enterprise Server is the intended way – the macOS client connects to it directly as well. In addition, the Web Client is available there; it is browser-based and works regardless of the operating system.
