Windows Client

What to do if Autotype no longer works in RDP and Windows login dialogs?

Since a Windows security update from January 2026, Windows blocks simulated keyboard input in specially protected login dialogs – above all in the login screen of Remote Desktop (RDP) connections and in Windows security dialogs. Password Depot's automatic filling (auto-complete/Autotype) is no longer granted input permission there. This is not a malfunction of Password Depot but a change in Windows behavior. There are two proven ways around it.

Solution 1: Switch the auto-complete method

The method Keyboard input simulation is affected by the block; the clipboard-based methods continue to work in many dialogs.

  1. Select the affected entry and open Properties → Additional tab.

  2. Under Auto-complete method, select e.g. Clipboard I - Paste with Shift+Ins or Clipboard II - Paste with Ctrl+V and test the dialog again.

  3. For new entries, set the default under Edit → Options (F10) → Passwords tab → Default auto-complete method.

If the target dialog does not permit any automatic input at all, copy the user name and password to the clipboard individually and paste them manually.

Solution 2 (recommended for RDP): the integrated Remote Desktop Connection

Password Depot can establish RDP connections directly – the Windows login dialog then no longer needs to be filled in at all:

  1. Click Edit → New → Remote Desktop Connection.

  2. Enter Computer (address of the target machine), User, and Password. Optionally, you can specify additional mstsc parameters under Command line – user name, password, and address are passed automatically and do not belong there.

  3. Save the entry. From then on, start the connection by clicking the entry; the credentials are passed directly to the Remote Desktop connection.

Note: RDP connections do not support passwords containing double quotation marks ("). Windows processes this character incorrectly when passing credentials to the Credential Manager – the connection may fail. Avoid this character in RDP passwords.
