Android & iOS

Where does the iOS app store my databases – and what to do if they are missing after an iOS update?

The iOS app stores local databases in its own app folder, which you can access via Apple's Files app: Files → On My iPhone → Password Depot. Key files (*.pdk) are located there in the External Keys subfolder. If, on the other hand, your database is stored at a connected cloud storage location or on the Password Depot Enterprise Server, it is not kept permanently on the device but opened from there.

After an iOS update: a database is no longer displayed

Occasionally, users report that locally stored databases no longer appear in the app after an iOS update. In this case, search directly on the device:

  1. Open the Files app and check the folder On My iPhone → Password Depot.

  2. Search across the device: enter the database name or the extension .pswe in the search field of the Files app, and check both On My iPhone and iCloud Drive.

  3. If the file is found, move it back to the folder On My iPhone → Password Depot – it then reappears in the app's database list.

  4. If the database was stored at a cloud storage location, simply reconnect the service in the app; the database is still unchanged in the cloud.

What we cannot do – and how to take precautions

The behavior of the iOS file system during system updates is outside of Password Depot. If iOS removed an exclusively locally stored file during an update and no copy exists, neither the app nor AceBIT can restore it: your database is processed only on your own devices, and AceBIT does not have a copy of it. For problems of the Apple environment (Files app, iCloud, iOS updates), we therefore cannot provide support.

How to take precautions:

  • Additionally keep important databases at a cloud storage location, or keep an up-to-date copy on your PC.

  • In particular, save a backup copy of the .pswe file in a second location before every iOS update.

Note: How to transfer databases and key files between PC and iPhone is described in the article "How do I transfer my database and key file to my iPhone/iPad – without iTunes?".
