Where does the macOS client store databases and backups?

The macOS client of Password Depot stores your databases and the backup files created by Password Depot in two different locations. This article shows where to find the files – for example, for your own data backup or when moving to a new Mac.

Databases

By default, the macOS client stores your password databases in the Documents folder of your user account. If you deliberately saved or opened a database in a different location, that location applies instead.

Backups

The backup files, by contrast, are not located in the "Documents" folder but in the Password Depot app container under Library/Containers in your home folder. This area is hidden in the Finder by default. To get there:

  1. Open the Finder.

  2. Hold down the Option key (⌥) and open the Go menu – the otherwise hidden Library entry appears.

  3. In it, open the Containers folder and look for the Password Depot entry.

Alternatively, choose Go → Go to Folder … (Shift-Command-G) and enter ~/Library/Containers. (The ~ character represents your personal home folder.)

Note: For your own backup or a move to a new Mac, primarily back up your database files from the Documents folder (or the location you chose yourself). The backup files in the container are additional fallback copies; do not change or move the contents of the container while Password Depot is running.

Note: The same container also holds the client's cache (folder "Network"). Renaming it is a proven step for connection problems with the Enterprise Server – see "Related topics".
