Licensing

Why is my license key shown as “invalid”?

If your license key or unlock code is rejected when you enter it, in the vast majority of cases the key itself is not the problem: the installed program version does not match the main version the key was issued for. Each key is valid for exactly one main version (e.g. version 19).

Check that version and key match as follows:

  1. Determine the installed version. In the Windows client, click Help → About Password Depot – this dialog shows the program version and the installed license key. On the Enterprise Server, open Manage → Server License in the Server Manager; the dialog shows the Server version and the installed license.

  2. Check which main version your key was issued for. You can find this in your delivery or order confirmation email.

  3. Install the matching version. If the two do not match, download the main version that matches your key. The most common case: the latest version was installed from the download page although the key was issued for an older main version. You can find older versions via the article under “Related topics”.

  4. Or: request new keys for the upgrade. If you prefer to use the new main version instead, you need a new delivery or a new unlock code – see “How do I get new license keys for the upgrade to version 19?”.

Special case Enterprise Server: update without active software maintenance

On the Enterprise Server, all updates – including patch updates within the same main version (e.g. from 19.1.0 to 19.2.1) – require active software maintenance. If an update was installed although the maintenance had expired, the existing license key is rejected. In this case, renew your software maintenance (retroactive renewal is possible) or reinstall the version you last obtained under your maintenance.

Note: The free editions for macOS, Linux, Android and iOS do not require a license key; they do not offer a key entry field. A license is required only for the Windows client or the Enterprise Server.
